Gringo is a word used to describe a foreigner in Latin America. This term is also used to refer to people of European descent who do not speak Spanish.
Gringo first appeared in the Castilian Dictionary of 1787. It is most likely derived from griego, which is a Spanish word for "Greek".
In Latin America, gringo is often used to denote a non-Latin American who is not familiar with the language. However, it can be used in a positive way as well.
During the Mexican-American War, American soldiers wore green coats when marching through Mexico, and sang the Robert Burns song, Green Grow the Rashes, O! The song was popular in Mexico.
Some of the first gringos in Argentina were non-Spanish Europeans. These included British and Irish travelers. A few years later, however, the term was used to refer to a group of Americans who were stationed in Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines.
Often, the term is regarded as an insult. It can be offensive to other people who are not from the US, and some people even take offense to being called a gringo.
However, the meaning of gringo is different for each country and region. For example, in Peru, it relates to fair-skinned people. Meanwhile, in Argentina, it mainly refers to rural areas.
In Latin America, the term gringo is used to designate white foreigners who do not speak Spanish. Sometimes, it is also applied to non-Latin Americans.
